Have A Happy What???

At the end of her news break going into Fox's Special Report with Brit Hume, Page Hopkins signs off with "Have a happy Memorial Day".

What???

Sorry, ma'am, but Memorial Day is not usually associated with the word "happy". This is the day set aside to remember and honor those who have given their lives in the service of their country. It should be marked by somber reflection, not warm fuzzies and smiley faces.

Of course, this should not come as too much of a surprise in a country where every "holiday" is seen only as a cause for entertainment and -- worse yet -- commerce.

God help America...

You Can Take The Kid Out Of The Ghetto...

...but it's a lot harder to take the ghetto out of the kid.

The Virgin Queen shows why throwing money at government schools is not the answer.

It's interesting to note that these kids got their promise when they were in the second grade. According to Morris Massey, one's worldview is pretty much set by the age of 10, barring a "significant emotional event". We would dare to suggest that a promise of having one's college completely paid for would have a significant impact on one's thinking. Unfortunately, when that one-time good deal is set against a daily backdrop of "you can't make it" messages, it tends to get drowned out.

God help America....

Newsweek Lied; People Died

When Pres. Bush put together his coalition of twenty-nine nations to unseat the Butcher of Baghdad -- who had been thumbing his nose at seventeen U.N. resolutions over twelve years -- one of his many reasons for doing so had to do with a faulty piece of intelligence provided by the British. It didn't matter, of course, that Pres. Bush believed it to be true, the mantra of the Lunatic Left became "Bush lied; people died".

Now the shoe is squarely on the other foot. Newsweek magazine publishes a story alleging that American interrogators at Guantanamo Bay flushed copies of the Koran down the toilet without properly investigating the story first and Muslims in the Middle East go on a rampage, killing at least 16. So, where's the outrage? Newsweek lied; people died.

Oh, but they did print a retraction. Of sorts. Funny how A)"journalistic standards" apply to the blogosphere, but not the legacy media; and B)unlike Jason Blair at the New York Times, Michael Isikoff is not being forced to resign.

Not that there's any bias in the legacy media, though.

UPDATE: Apparently, what's sauce for the goose isn't sauce for the gander.

But Then Who Would Be The Whipping Boy?

Germany's ambassador to Great Britain has finally said the unspeakable -- WW2 is over; get over it. And it's high time. Over a half-century after the war ended -- and most involved are dead -- much of the world is still obsessed with the Third Reich. We doubt that a day goes by without the History Channel re-running yet another look inside the Hitler era. That alone would be bad enough, even if they did manage to get people to pronounce his first name correctly and/or acknowledge that only a minority of Germans ever belonged to the NSDAP.

Of course, one naturally wonders why anyone would be so obsessed with that period in history. It's not like it hasn't been studied to death; it has. But... has anyone learned anything from it? Unfortunately, apparently not.

But for most of 60 years, that particular period has served a very useful service for the Left: it provides a very handy boogyman with which to scare people into accepting Socialism. All they need to do is demonize anyone to the right of FDR as a "Nazi" or a "Fascist" and hold out Socialism -- under the guise of the "mainstream" -- to advance their "progressive" agenda. Where they're "progressing", of course, should be obvious. So far, it's worked pretty well.

As we've said on many occasions, however, Fascism and Socialism are two sides of the same counterfeit coin.

Well, at least she "apologized"

Y'know, once -- just once -- we'd like to see someone like the Runwaway Bride come right out and say "Gee, folks, I was an idiot. I don't know how I could possily have done such a stupid thing or how I'm going to make it up to all the people I've hurt and/or inconvenienced."

We're not asking much here, just a sincere apology that aknowledges that the person in question actually did something wrong. Is that too much to ask?

There was a day when people who did stupid and hurtful thing were shunned by society, at least until after they offered a sincere and abject apology. Nowadays, since nothing's really "wrong" or "right" anymore, people don't seem to feel a need to apologize anymore.

Instead, look for an appearance soon on "Oprah", where -- instead of being chastised for her foolhardiness and insensitivity -- she'll be praised for being "brave". That, of course, will no doubt coincide with a book deal. Maybe even a movie of the week.

Oh, for the good old days....

An Old Soldier Fades Away

It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of retired Army Col. David Hackworth. "Hack", as he was affectionately known, was a thorn in the eye of the "perfumed princes" at the Pentagon. He was also one of this country's most decorated veterans and didn't stop serving even when he retired.

Since 1997, he wrote a commentary for World Net Daily. He also served as chairman of Soldiers for The Truth, which has posted his bio .

Rest in peace, sir. You've earned it.

She Didn't Know???

The military judge presiding over PFC Lynndie England's court martial rejected her guilty plea today, saying that he "wasn't convinced" that she knew that her actions were wrong?

Huh?

PFC England is 22 years old. In 22 years, she hasn't learned that abusing people is wrong? An Army E-3 hasn't been taught that you don't abuse prisoners?

Hogwash.

Anyone over the age of about eight or ten knows right from wrong. How does one get to be 22 and not know that there are certain things you just don't do?

Fortunately, this is not the end of the story. The charge has not been dismissed, only the plea rejected. There'll be another Article 32 hearing and maybe this time, they'll get it right.
