Mopping Up In The Big Sleazy

Fox News Channel's Jonathan Hunt had an interview with a couple of people who were in New Orleans to help with the relief effort. Ah, but such a contrast!

The first one was some woman (she'd want us to mention her name) from an organization called the "Common Ground Collective" (emphasis added). Her collectivist mindset was betrayed by the fact that every question Mr. Hunt asked her was answered with yet another plea for "the government" (using the taxpayers' dime, of course) to do something. At no time did she ever mention the possibility of the people doing anything for themselves. She even made a pitch for viewers to send in money and supplies. Which might not have been so odious had she at some point expressed the least bit of gratitude to those who have already helped and are still helping.

The other interviewee was a gentleman named Jack McGee from some organization called either "Rescue Me" or "Corps of Compassion" (both names were mentioned). Not once did he mention the government. He was there to help the people help themselves.

And there you have it: one person blames the government for all the world's ills and calls on government to solve every problem, the other lays no blame but merely tries to help people help themselves.

And thus, you have the clearest cut distinction between charity and altruism. Charity is "The Lord (via concerned hearts and hands) helping those who help themselves." Altruism is some look-good, OMFR heir standing up and demanding someone else, usually Der Schtaat do something about a problem that their previous interference has usually caused.
